Strong winds and ice brought down power lines in North Iceland yesterday resulting in blackouts across the region.
According to Pétur Vopni Sigurðsson, an employee at the Iceland State Electricity company, the damage to power lines is the worst in 17 years, ruv.is reports. As reported yesterday, snowfall of 15 to 20 centimeters in the north is believed to have set a new record for this time of the year.
The highest recorded wind speed yesterday as of 8 pm last night was 61.1 m/s in Bjarnarflag, Northeast Iceland, according to the website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO). Dust storms hit South and Southwest Iceland.
According to the IMO, a 975mb low-pressure system lies southeast of East Iceland.
