Your regular sports drinks can contain up to five times more sugar than a donut, new research has shockingly revealed. An investigation by The Sun found that famous energy brand Lucozade has 4.8 teaspoons of sugar in a 500ml bottle.

That is three times the 1.5 teaspoons in a McDonald’s donut. Another brand, Gatorade, has a massive 7.5 teaspoons of sugar per 500ml. And Powerade ION4 Isotonic – promoted by Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Jessica Ennis – has 4.87 teaspoons.

The European Food Safety Authority says anyone exercising less than 45 minutes should stick to drinking water. Sports drinks are only needed by “active individuals performing endurance exercise”, they have warned. (ANI)
