The son of a Hamas leader who spied on the powerful Islamist movement for Israel from 1997-2004 has come out against Islam in a press conference during a visit to Jerusalem.

Author and former spy to Israel, Mosab Hassan Yousef:

“Stand with democracy against dictatorships and against absolute control of religion and over people’s lives.”

The former spy published a book on his exploits in 2010 and has since taken refuge in the United States. Whilst in Jerusalem Yousef spoke to journalists about plans for film on the Prophet Mohammed which he said would reveal the “real nature” of Islam, which he called a “religion of war” holding his people back.

Author and former spy to Israel, Mosab Hassan Yousef:

I believe that Palestinians need freedom and human rights more than they need a state. I think if they can get to that level of intellect and they can fight for their freedoms and respect women and respect personal freedoms and protect religious freedoms as well – If they do all that I think then the world will believe that they can be a partner and they can build a Palestinian state. But as is, I don’t think so.

Yousef makes no apologies for his actions, which have seen him branded a traitor by his own people and shunned by his family.

Author and former spy to Israel, Mosab Hassan Yousef:

Usually people are ashamed when they do something wrong. People love to live in the darkness, as my God says, to live in the darkness so they are not exposed. I live in the light. I didn’t do anything wrong. I’ve done mistakes in my life and I have the courage to face the mistakes that I make. But I didn’t do anything wrong by saving a human life.

The film is likely to cause outrage among Muslims who consider any depiction of the Prophet Mohamed to be deeply blasphemous.
