Russian compatriots abroad are calling on the European Union to grant their language the status of an official working language.
This initiative was taken by the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots in France.
“The Russian language is the native language of 6.5 million people living in the EU, while a similar number of people are fluent in Russian. This is a solid basis for declaring Russian as an official working language,” Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department handling compatriots’ affairs, Alexander Chepurin said addressing a conference of “Compatriots – Descendents of Great Russians”.
Among its participants are descendents of 32 famous Russian family names.
